Rachel Garrett Counselor

Eating Disorders and Recovery

Eating disorders can take on many forms, including anorexia, bulimia, binge eating disorder, orthorexia, avoidant and restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID), and other specified feeding or eating disorder (OSFED).. My approach combines evidence-based techniques, such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), with a compassionate and non-judgmental environment to help you develop and maintain a more healthy relationship with food, your body, and exercise. I believe in treating you as a whole person, not just your eating disorder. By fostering skills and strategies for managing stress, emotions, and triggers, I aim to support realistic, sustainable, and long-lasting recovery. I also recognize that recovery often involves a multidisciplinary approach. I will collaborate with medical professionals, dietitians, and other specialists as needed to ensure comprehensive care. I also may encourage family involvement and support if necessary to provide guidance and education to help your loved ones contribute positively to your recovery journey. If it is in my discretion that a higher level of care is needed, I will provide referrals to help meet your current needs.

Body Image Issues

Navigating body image concerns can be incredibly challenging due to conflicting views and opinions within our family systems, social circles, culture, and media. We will work together to help you build awareness around how your beliefs were shaped, address negative self-perceptions, build self-esteem, and foster a more positive and accepting view of your body. Together, we will work towards achieving a healthier and more compassionate self-image.

Body-Focused Repetitive Behaviors (BFRBs)

BFRBs are repetitive behaviors that are done to the body that end up causing noticeable impact to the body. BFRBs often serve to soothe the nervous system, and include behaviors such as hair pulling (trichotillomania), skin picking (dermatillomania), and nail biting (onychophagia). They can significantly disrupt your daily life and result in feelings of guilt, shame, and embarrassment as they are often hard to control and difficult to explain. I approach these behaviors with gentleness and compassion, and utilize specialized strategies to help regulate your body in productive ways, while addressing the underlying emotional and psychological factors as well.

Anxiety

We live in a world today that is full of anxiety and uncertainty. Anxiety can manifest in many forms, from general anxiety to specific phobias and panic attacks. I offer tailored interventions to help you understand and manage your anxiety, develop coping strategies, and work towards a more balanced and fulfilling life.

Grief

Grieving the loss of a loved one or significant life change is a deeply personal process. Grief can take on many forms, including the loss of a loved one or pet, loss of a job, a relocation, a new diagnosis, or loss of a dream. I will provide a warm space for you to navigate the complex emotions associated with your loss, learn to move forward with your loss, and eventually find purpose and meaning in your experience.

Life Transitions

I believe that all change, both good and bad, involves loss. Major life changes, such as a shift in career, a relocation to a new town, becoming a new parent, or changes in personal relationships, can be overwhelming. I offer guidance and support to help you adapt to these transitions, find clarity, explore how it shapes your identity, and build resilience as you work to move forward in your life.

Maternal Issues

Navigating the journey of motherhood can bring a mix of joy, challenges, and significant changes. It often involves redefining your sense of identity, priorities, and purpose. I provide support for women experiencing various maternal issues, such as pregnancy and prenatal adjustments and postpartum support. I also provide support in helping you explore your evolving roles, foster self-care practices, and maintain a sense of self amidst the demands of motherhood. In our sessions, we will work together to address these aspects of maternal life with empathy and a focus on your well-being.
